Comparing File Sizes of Image File Formats
This section provides a quick comparison of file sizes of 3 image file formats, BMP, XCF and JPEG, of the same gradient spiral image.
Now we have a single image saved in 3 file formats. Let's compare them by their file sizes:
Open a command line window and go to the folder where those image files are saved:
File sizes tell us that:
- BMP format with 24-bit colors: 62,262 bytes - The image data is about 144 x 144 x 24 bits = 497,664 bits
= 62,208 bytes. So there is no compression in BMP format.
- XCF format: 41,767 bytes - Comparing to the image data size, 62,208 bytes, XCF format has a 33% compression rate.
- JPEG format with 100% quality level: 10,914 bytes - Comparing to the image data size, 62,208 bytes, JPEG format has a 82% compression rate.
