What Is Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition
This section provides a quick introduction on Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition. You don't need Express Edition if you have access to a regular SQL Server.
Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition is the free version of the Microsoft SQL Server.
You can download, install and use it to learn JDBC API for SQL Server databases.
With SQL Server Express Edition installed on your local computer,
you will get all the required information for the JDBC driver to access
a SQL Server database as listed below:
- Server Network Address - Host name or IP address of the computer system
where Microsoft SQL Server is running. For example, "localhost" should be
used if the SQL Server is running on the local computer.
- Port Number - Network port number where the SQL Server is listening for
incoming connection request. For example, "1433" should be the default port number
if the SQL Server is running only one instance. Port number is not needed,
if you have the Instance Name.
- Instance Name - Name of the instance if the SQL Server is running multiple
instances. SQL Server can map the instance name to the port number where
the instance is listening. For example, "SQLEXPRESS" is the default
instance name if you are running the SQL Server Express Edition.
- Database Name - Name of the database you want to access on the SQL Server instance.
For example, "AdventureWorks", which is a free sample database you can download
and install from Microsoft Website.
- User Name - Name of the user login account that has the permission to access
the given database. For example, "sa" should be administrator login name
if you are running the SQL Server Express Edition.
- Password - Password for the user login account.
For example, "HerongY@ng" is the password you selected for "sa" login name
during the SQL Server Express Edition installation process.
However, if you have access to an existing SQL Server database
with the above information provided, you don't need to install
SQL Server Express Edition and skip all tutorials in this chapter.
