"regedit.exe" - Importing Registry Keys

This section provides a tutorial example on how to import registry keys and values from a backup registry file.

When you export registry keys to a backup file, regedit.exe will write all registry values under those selected registry keys to the file in text format. Here is a copy of the backup registry file exported from the previous section:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
   \CurrentVersion\Applets\FreeCell]
"lost"=hex:04,00,00,00
"won"=hex:4f,01,00,00
"losses"=hex:04,00,00,00
"wins"=hex:4d,00,00,00
"streak"=hex:02,00,00,00
"stype"=hex:01,00,00,00
"AlreadyPlayed"=hex:01,00,00,00

Sometime later, If you want to replace those registry values that are currently stored in the registry with those values stored in this backup file, I can use the "Import" function of "regedit.exe" as described below:

1. Start "regedit.exe".

2. Click the menu "File > Import". The Import Registry File dialog box shows up.

4. Select the file c:\herong\FreeCell.reg, and click OK to import all registry keys and values from that file.

5. Verify the "FreeCell" registry key now. Its registry values should be restored to the data stored in the backup file.
