Windows 8: System Firewall Settings

This section provides a tutorial example on how to review and modify Windows Firewall settings on Windows 8 system.

The second item in your security protection plan is to make sure Windows Firewall is turned on to prevent hackers or malicious software from gaining access to your computer through the Internet or a network.

1. Go to "Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall" and click the "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" link. You will see the firewall "Customize Settings" screen.

2. Review and adjust each setting as suggested below:

Customize settings for each type of network

Pprivate network settings
   [x] Turn on Windows Firewall
[ ] Block all incoming connections, including those in the
           list of allowed programs
[x] Notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program
[ ] Turn off Windows Firewall (not recommended)

Public network settings
   [x] Turn on Windows Firewall
[ ] Block all incoming connections, including those in the
           list of allowed programs
[x] Notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program
[ ] Turn off Windows Firewall (not recommended)

3. Click "OK" to save changes.

Note that settings listed above block both incoming and outgoing connections on all programs with exceptions defined in advanced settings. See the next section for details.
