"rar" and "unrar" - Roshal Archive Files

This section provides a tutorial example on how to use 'unrar' package to extract files from a RAR archive file.

What is RAR file format?, RAR (Roshal Archive) is file compression and archive format developed in 1993 by Russian software engineer Eugene Roshal.

A unique feature of RAR file format is the ability of creating multi-volume archive. If you have a huge amount of files, RAR can archive them into a series of archive files named with .rar, .r00, r01, ... file extensions. Each archive file can be limited to a given size. This was extremely useful back in the old days, when files were transferred by 720 KB or 1.44 MB floppy disks.

If you receive a .rar archive file on your Ubuntu computer, you need to install the "unrar" package to extract files from the archive as shown below:

# install "unrar" package
herong$ sudo apt install unrar

# extract all files from a RAR archive
herong$ unrar x old_stuff.rar
