Getting Database Server and Driver Info
This section describes how to get database server and JDBC driver information through the DatabaseMetaData object.
If you want to know the database server name and version, or the JDBC driver name and version, you can get them through the DatabaseMetaData object as shown in the following sample program:
/* DatabaseInfo.java - Copyright (c) 2015, HerongYang.com, All Rights Reserved. */ import java.sql.*; public class DatabaseInfo { public static void main(String [] args) { Connection con = null; try { // Obtaining a connection to SQL Server con = DriverManager.getConnection( "jdbc:sqlserver://localhost\\SQLEXPRESS;" + "user=sa;password=HerongY@ng;" + "database=AdventureWorks2014"); // Database and driver info DatabaseMetaData meta = con.getMetaData(); System.out.println("Server name: " + meta.getDatabaseProductName()); System.out.println("Server version: " + meta.getDatabaseProductVersion()); System.out.println("Driver name: " + meta.getDriverName()); System.out.println("Driver version: " + meta.getDriverVersion()); System.out.println("JDBC major version: " + meta.getJDBCMajorVersion()); System.out.println("JDBC minor version: " + meta.getJDBCMinorVersion()); con.close(); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } }
If you run this example program with JDK 1.8 and sqljdbc42.jar from JDBC Driver 4.2, you will get:
C:\herong>\Progra~1\java\jdk1.8.0_45\bin\javac DatabaseInfo.java C:\herong>\Progra~1\java\jdk1.8.0_45\bin\java -cp .;\local\lib\sqljdbc42.jar DatabaseInfo Server name: Microsoft SQL Server Server version: 12.00.2000 Driver name: Microsoft JDBC Driver 4.2 for SQL Server Driver version: 4.2.6225.100 JDBC major version: 4 JDBC minor version: 2
If you run this example program with JDK 1.8 and sqljdbc41.jar from JDBC Driver 4.2, you will get:
C:\herong>\Progra~1\java\jdk1.8.0_45\bin\java -cp .;\local\lib\sqljdbc41.jar DatabaseInfo Server name: Microsoft SQL Server Server version: 12.00.2000 Driver name: Microsoft JDBC Driver 4.2 for SQL Server Driver version: 4.2.6225.100 JDBC major version: 4 JDBC minor version: 1
The output tells us why Microsoft provides multiple JAR files in the JDBC Driver 4.2 package: sqljdbc42.jar supports JDBC API 4.2 and sqljdbc41 supports JDBC API 4.1.
