Best Seetings of Folder Options

This section describes best settings for folder options on Windows Explorer on Windows 7 systems.

On a new computer, you may want to use the following suggested settings for your folder options:

1. Click menu: Organize > Layout and set:

  Checked - Menu bar
Unchecked - Details pane
Unchecked - Preview pane
  Checked - Navigation page

2. Click menu: Organize > Folder and search options and review General tab:

  Checked - Open each folder in the same window
  Checked - Double-click to open an item (single-click to select)
  Checked - Show all folders
  Checked - Automatically expand to current folder

3. Click menu: Organize > Folder and search options and review View tab:

  Checked - Always show icons, never thumbnails
  Checked - Always show menus
  Checked - Display file icon on thumbnails
  Checked - Display file size information in folder tips
Unchecked - Display the full path in the title bar
  Checked - Show hidden files, folders, and drivers
Unchecked - Hide empty drives in the Computer folder
Unchecked - Hide extension for known file types
Unchecked - Hide protected operating system files
Unchecked - Launch folder windows in a separate process
Unchecked - Restore previous folder windows at logon
  Checked - Show drive letter
  Checked - Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color
  Checked - Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items
Unchecked - Show preview handlers in preview pane
  Checked - Use check boxes to select items
  Checked - Use Sharing Wizard
  Checked - When typing into list view, select the typed item in view

4. Click menu: Organize > Folder and search options and review Search tab:

  Checked - In indexed locations, search file name and contents.
            In non-indexed locations, search file name only.
  Checked - Include subfolders in search results when searching in...
  Checked - Find Partial matches
Unchecked - Use natural language search
Unchecked - Don't use the index when searching in the file folders...
  Checked - Include system directories
Unchecked - Include compressed files (ZIP, CAB...)
